How did you get into Web Development?
Posted 05 September 2009 - 12:26 PM (#1)
Personally for me, it was designing because I always loved art. And I like to draw which pushed me into the direction of digital art, then after a couple of years I got to know some coders, some good coders at that and seeing the results is mind blowing.
The things you can achive with coding is much greater than design though the design is the frontend and people see it more, I would much prefer to code and have a good feeling about creating some kick ass app/forum/JS,PHP codes than I would design.
Whats your story?

So there was a reason, you wanted to make personal wordpress themes.
Thats a good enough reason to get into Web Dev.

My story is really interesting :P
Once I learned that [b ] tags make text bold :P I started to find more such codes to make my posts decorative ;). I was used to use BBCodes. One day I found something similar can be done with HTML tags so I did the same with HTML codes, too. I got Dreamveawer and learned lots of new tags. I got much interested in coding so I refered some tutorial sites and learned HTML properly. Thats how I started.
Then I herd that there is something called CSS. I searched about it and learned some CSS from tutorial sites. After that I started making some website templates my self but couldn't make one so I downloaded some templates, observed how they have been coded and started to make one again :P I did it, finally.
And from that day, I call myself a web designer :P

Exactly...!
I learned 2 things from my own experience...
1) Practice make perfect
2) Learning from examples is the best way to learn coding ;)

I figured bugging people to help you works well too :P

...I wouldn't say I am into it yet, not in practise: I've been learning code etc without showing anyone (well, anyone much) but in theory, I have several projects that I can only really fulfil if I make my own sites, so, I have decided to find a private site to see how it goes and then, well, I will continue to refine my ideas (especially if they are not as I hoped they would be) and also, I am daring myself to actually let other people see what I am doing... (it's hard to have the confidence when I see what amazing stuff other people do but my ideas are my own and I'm feeling I have to trust myself more)
I know I could probably get someone else to design for me but that sounds like no fun and I want to do it myself; I love coding, so I'm getting on with searching for the next step... I'm almost afraid to start properly for fear that I will never want to stop... this site really has been an inspiration :D
Eh! omg I have made more than one post here. Sorry, I will go delete the other one immediately. *Confusion* oh dear, sorry.

...if I edited this, it is most likely cos I made a typo again; although maybe not. Here's hoping not! (Y)

Im sure that your work would be fine aurora-x, and anyone here would be happy to help you along the way if you hit a speed bump.

Aww, that's nice of you, Andrew. Encouragement is terrific :)
...I don't share the confidence in my work, but I know people here always help if possible, so I might get there some day! I can't imagine running a site. Not yet. Too much. Too confusing.
I am really sorry, I did think I had made two entries here, one too soon after the other. OMG I really hope I haven't made three now or anything so dreadful. I came to delete one and here I am talking.
Thanks, though! (YY)

Back in 2003 my brother's friend started a flash website which I found to be amazing and so that was the beginning for me, although it took me a few years until I could actually do something useful. His friend helped me get started with the basics and told me what to learn and where to learn it. He also used a Proboards forum and that's how I came to Proboards which is where I started to play with Javascript in 06/07. Now I'm majoring in computer science at university so I've come along way. Too bad my brother's friend ran off with some cult, I'll never be able to say thanks. :P
